As an absolute minimum, an Oracle Collaboration Suite installation must have two Oracle homes: one to support the infrastructure, and one to run the middle tier application services. The infrastructure tier will include a database used as the repository for both infrastructure data and application data. Depending on the scale of the installation and the requirements for high availability, there may be a need for multiple infrastructure instances, multiple middle tier instances, and multiple databases. Each of these must run from its own Oracle home. As all the Oracle Collaboration Suite components communicate over TCP layered protocols, the various middle tier and infrastructure components can be distributed across any number of physical machines running a variety of operating systems, or they can be concentrated on one node. The requirement for at least two Oracle home directories is sometimes irritating for administrators new to the Oracle environment, but it is a natural result of the complexity of the product. Indeed, release 9i of Oracle Collaboration Suite required three Oracle homes, preferably on three machines: one for the infrastructure components, another for the middle tier components, and a third for the component databases. The use of multiple home directories is in fact a feature of the product that makes it possible to run different versions of different components concurrently, and the fact that this is built into even the most basic single-node installation contributes to the scalability and maintainability of the suite.
